Artistic Institutions and the Commons with Camille Richert
How Can We Rethink the Ecology of Production in the Performing Arts—Collectively?
The growing trend toward overproduction and consumption in contemporary culture affects artistic practices and reveals a gap between institutions and the actual needs of society. Quantity is prioritized over quality, speed over sustainability, and visibility over meaningful impact.
Art historian Camille Richert and least highlight the urgent need to rethink cultural production and reception models, as part of the M2ACT X FORUM DANSE. They propose moving toward approaches that are more in tune with communities and more sustainable in the management of creative and material resources. Culture and the arts should be regarded as commons—shared by and benefiting the entire community, accessible and relevant to everyone.
Building on the real-life contexts of the participants, the group explores how to support what is valued in arts and culture, and examines how these values might endure. Participants identify what can no longer—or should no longer—continue, and consider how new, viable activities could replace these practices in the future, especially within the performing arts sector.
